The newly remodeled Peabody Essex Museum
graces Salem's center.

Salem's rich history imbues the town with a flavor all its own. Settled by the English in the early 1600s, it was an important port in the East Indian trade throughout the 18th century, and the city's maritime and colonial flavor still shine through. A thriving artist's community and an influx of young professionals have also begun to lend the area a cosmopolitan veneer.

In sunny weather, tourists are a common sight along Pickering Wharf, at the Peabody Essex Museum, and along the pedestrian mall at Essex Street. To truly understand the town, it helps to know a bit about Salem's past, present, and future.
